Chase Edwards Contemporary presents Summer Blu, a running exhibition paying homage to color field paintings, which originated in the 1940s and 1950s. Featured artists include Janet Jennings, Megan Sirianni-Brand, Christopher Martin, Theo Pinto, Melissa Herrington, Karen Scharer and George Tun Sein. Through this exhibition, viewers will discover the way these artists create color as their subject matter, and develop sophisticated language paired with minimalist gestures.
Color field paintings, shown in this exhibition, is a style of abstract painting inspired by European modernism that emerged in New York City. It is closely related to abstract expressionism. The color white represents a blank slate, symbolizing a new beginning or a fresh start. The color blue is associated with depth and stability, and beneficial to the mind and body. These two colors come together in a synchronicity reflective of that found in nature and represent the interplay of the sky and the sea; peacefulness and depth.
